The Importance of Tree Trimming

Tree Trimming is the process of removing plant parts to control growth, enhance beauty, improve function in the landscape or for safety reasons. It can also include shearing trees into a formal shape or reducing the weight of branches to avoid damage or hazards to people, cars and structures.

Proper pruning techniques help to maintain the structural integrity of a tree, which reduces the risk of damage during storms or high winds and can prevent the occurrence of limb failure, which is often the result of overgrowth or improperly formed lateral branches. This process also encourages new, healthy lateral branch growth to reduce the stress on the main branches from wind, snow or other weather conditions and allows space for vehicles and buildings under the canopy.

Many people choose to prune their trees to open up vistas, repair damage from storms or to create more sunlight for gardens or lawns. However, the most common reasons for pruning are to promote health, improve safety, enhance aesthetics and appearance, remove unsightly or dead branches, increase airflow and light penetration, control size and reduce the risk of disease and pests.

Pruning can be done at any time of the year, but it is best to perform it at a time that minimizes the stress on the tree and promotes good recovery. Ideally, it should be done before a tree starts growing in the spring or summer and after it has finished blooming in the fall or winter.

Some species of trees require more frequent trimming than others. Young trees need regular pruning to establish the shape of their canopy. This can vary from a few times per year for young evergreens to every 2 to 3 years for mature conifers and hardwoods.

It is important to keep in mind that each cut on a tree has long-term implications. A heavy trim may have little effect on a healthy tree, but it can cause irreparable harm to a stressed or damaged one. Pruning should be conducted by trained, licensed arborists with the skills to understand and respond to the needs of each individual tree.

Unskilled pruning can lead to serious problems including stub cuts, improperly placed wounds, insect and disease entry points, and structural weaknesses. A professional knows how to identify and correct each of these issues, which are sometimes difficult to see from the ground. Incorrect pruning practices can even make a problem worse, such as flush cuts that are made too close to the trunk, removing the branch collar and leaving long stubs. Other poor pruning methods such as topping, which is the indiscriminate removal of large branches, can weaken a tree and leave it susceptible to limb failure. It is also important to understand that a heavy trim may harm the overall health of a tree by disrupting the natural movement of its internal structure and causing a series of structural problems in the future. A professional arborist can identify the proper pruning method for each species of tree and the best time of year to prune it.
