What Is Tree Lopping and Why Should You Avoid It?

Tree Lopping is a form of maintenance that is used to shape trees or to reduce their overall height. It is a process that involves cutting the main branches of the tree and usually requires a professional arborist.

When the right pruning techniques are not employed, a poorly executed tree lopping can lead to long term damage and serious safety concerns. It is important to understand that lopping is a more drastic maintenance technique than pruning and should only be used in cases where immediate risk mitigation is required such as overgrown limbs that are nearing houses or roads.

The difference between tree lopping and regular pruning is that pruning is a gradual process of trimming or removing a small number of branches at a time to promote growth. However, the removal of a large percentage of a tree’s crown is not a gradual process and will cause significant damage to the health and structure of the tree.

In addition to the damage that is caused by the indiscriminate cutting of a large percentage of a tree’s foliage, the rapid re-growth of the trees leaves after lopping can make them unstable and increase the risk of limb or even complete branch failure. Furthermore, the open wounds that are created by the act of lopping leave the trees vulnerable to disease, pest infestations and bacterial and fungal decay.

The most obvious advantage of tree pruning is that it is a much more careful process that takes into account the health and longevity of your trees. It is also a much less expensive alternative to tree lopping and in many cases will have the same effect.

While some people may consider it acceptable to cut down a large part of a tree in order to achieve a particular aesthetic, the truth is that this approach is not only unsustainable but is extremely dangerous and can result in serious injury or even property damage.

If a large limb were to fall off of the tree, it could easily crush a car or break a window in a house. More importantly, it could also injure or kill a person or child and could cause extensive damage to the surrounding landscape.

While it is true that regular pruning can take a little longer than simply lopping your trees, the difference in the results will be noticeable and well worth the extra effort. In the long run, it will save you money, prevent costly damage to your property and promote a healthy and well-maintained landscape. Not to mention, a well-cared for tree is a beautiful addition to any home.
